Description checked by David Slater
Start -West Ewell station; finish: Berrylands station.
Terrain – Level walking on good paths and no stiles. Two steep filghts of steps at Berrylands station.
Getting there and back – South West Train Service from London Waterloo, or bus number 418 from Kingston and return Bus K2 from Berrylands station to Kingston.
Eating and Drinking – Carvery/Public House after four miles.
Leave West Ewell station, walk along short road straight ahead and turn left at the T junction. Take the next road on your left Old School Lane (1) to pick up a path leading to a footbridge over the railway. After crossing the railway turn right and follow the path parallel to the railway line until you cross a white foot bridge over a stream. Turn left after this footbridge (2) (you are now on the London Loop going towards Kingston) and keeping the stream on your left follow the path to a footbridge where the path continues with the stream on your right. After a short distance cross a footbridge and continue with the stream on your left to a road.
Cross the road and continue with the stream on your left until you pick up a path coming in from the left (3). Here bear right to the main road the A 240. Cross this road with care using the traffic lights and then walk across the end of Worcester Park road to pick up the path turning right off the main road. Note the stream is now on your right side. Continue along the path with the Hogsmill on your right noting the Go-cart facilities on your left. Eventually you come to minor road (4) where you emerge on to Cromwell Road for a short spell of road walking.
Walk along Cromwell Road with the Carvery/Public House on your left, a convenient place for refreshment, till you come to Grafton Road. Turn left and continue to the top of the hill to turn left into Royal Avenue. Keep going straight ahead via a metal road, a footpath, an unmade road, a made up road and, where the road turns left, on a footpath which drops down to a road (5). Cross this road with care, turn right up the hill then left on to a track which passes a church on the left (St John the Baptist).
Shortly after passing the church and going through a gateway the path turns left and descends back to the Hogsmill. There is a seat just past the church where one can have a late lunch. Be careful not to cross the Hogsmill by the footbridge but turn right (6), and keeping the Hogsmill on your left, pass under the railway bridge and you will come to a gate approximately 15 minutes up from the river which takes you out on to a service road along the side of the dual carriage way road – the A3.
To cross the A3 turn left up the service road. This takes you over the Hogsmill and you very shortly come to a pedestrian underpass. Use this to cross the road and turning right at its exit go back towards the Hogsmill. At the end of the buildings, just before the river, you take a gate on the left (7) and continue along a path keeping the river on your right until you come to a bridge over a side stream (8).
Shortly after crossing the bridge turn left on to a crossing path and cycle track which takes you to a road corner. Keep straight ahead on to Surbiton Hill Road to a roundabout where you turn right down Chiltern Drive to Berrylands Station. Climb the stairs to the station.
