May 2013 Walks

There is continuing difficulty with travel at weekends largely due to engineering work.  Please check all train times. We will endeavour to put any changes on the home page of this website, but this cannot be guaranteed.


Saturday May 4                 Berkhamsted to Tring linear. About 12 miles. Explore woods and ridges through the Ashridge Estate (hopefully bluebells) and out to Ivinghoe Beacon. Early lunch at Little Gaddesden and tea stop at NT café before descent to Albury and Tring. Depart Euston 9.34, Harrow & Wealdstone 9.46, arrive Berkhamsted 10.11.

Saturday May 5                 Wendover circular. 11 miles. Hilly morning, usually some mud. Via Coombe Hill and Chequers to the Red Lion, Whiteleaf for lunch. Return via Little Hampden and Dunsmore. Depart Marylebone 8.57, Harrow-on-the-hill 9.09, arrive Wendover 9.44.

Tuesday May 7                  Circular evening walk in Richmond Park including the Isabella Plantation.  Meet at the Richmond side of Richmond Bridge at 6.30.                Leader: Ken Royce


Wednesday May 8             Great Missenden circular.  Pub lunch probably at Speen or Great Hampden. 11.5 miles, no serious hills.  Depart Marylebone 9.42, arrive Great Missenden 10.23.

Saturday May 11               Welwyn North circular. 10-11 miles.  Pub or picnic at Datchworth, possible tea at the station. Depart King’s Cross 10.06, arrive Welwyn North 10.34.

Sunday May 12                 Linear Kingston to Hatton Cross on the London Loop. About 10 miles with lunch at The Old Goat, Fulwell. Depart Waterloo 9.48, arrive Kingston 10.16 (Shepperton service).

Saturday May 18               Princes Risborough circular. 12 miles via Bledlow and Henton. Depart Marylebone 9.33, arrive Princes Risborough 10.18.

Sunday May 19                 Linear Bishopstone to Seaford. 14 miles.  Downland walking with several steep ascents.  Alfriston for lunch (The Smugglers Inn). Afterwards following the Cuckmere River to Exeat for the final climb to Seaford Head before descending to the Promenade for possible tea at the kiosk. Drop-out points at Alfriston and Exeat.  Depart Victoria 8.47, Clapham Junction 8.53, East Croydon 9.06, change at Lewes for the 10.03 to Seaford, alighting at Bishopstone at 10.18.

Saturday May 25               Great Bedwyn circular. 10 miles, fairly flat. Steady pace in the morning. Lunch at The Three Horseshoes, Stibbs Green. Depart Paddington 9.18, Reading 9.48 OR Ealing Broadway 8.35 change at Reading, arrive Bedwyn 10.31.
