West London Ramblers

August 2014 Walks

The group has to stay together, so give some thought to your level of fitness and the walk description before choosing your walk. Look for distance, hills and pace of the walk. West London country walks tend to have a reasonable pace.

 

Saturday August 2        Mortimer circular.  9 miles.  Mostly flat. Via Roman town of Calleva (lunch) and Silchester Common.  Depart Paddington 9.30 (or Ealing Broadway 9.05), change Reading 9.57 for 10.06 arriving Mortimer 10.17. Mobile on the day only 07952 839 653.

Saturday August 9                    Constable Country. A flattish 7 mile circular walk around Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley.  Lunch or picnic at  Dedham,  then on to Flatfoot Mill (NT) for tea and cakes. Depart Liverpool Street 10am (Norwich train), arrive Manningtree 11.00. Mobile on the day only (07751957380).

Sunday August 10                     Wendover circular. 11 miles. Hilly morning. Via Coombe Hill and Chequers to the Red Lion, Whiteleaf for lunch. Return via Little Hampden and Dunsmore. Depart Marylebone 9.12, Harrow-on-the-hill 9.24, arrive Wendover 10.00.

Wednesday 13 August              Linear Effingham to West Humble, via Effingham Common, Polesden Lacey (cafe or picnic lunch), Ranmore Common, North Downs Way. Possible tea at Denbies. About 10 miles, undulating. Depart Waterloo 10.03, Clapham Junction 10.11, arrive Effingham Junction 10.45.

Sunday, August 17                    Box Hill circular in the Surrey hills.  Nine miles. Via Mickleham Downs to Headley (lunch at The Cock Inn or picnic). A hilly return via Headley Heath, Juniper Top and Box Hill. Depart Victoria 9.40, Clapham Junction 9.47, (or Waterloo 9.32, Wimbledon 9.48, change at Epsom),  arrive Box Hill & West Humble 10.36.

Wednesday August 20              Linear Amersham to Rickmansworth.  12 miles via South Bucks Way to Chalfont St Peter (lunch). Then across Pynesfield Lakes, returning along canal to Rickmansworth.  Depart Marylebone 9.42, Harrow-on-the Hill 9.54, arrive Amersham 10.17.

Saturday August 23                  Linear Leighton Buzzard to Tring.  12 miles via the Two Ridges Link which joins the Greensand Ridge walk to the Ridgeway.      Walk follows Grand Union Canal, then to Slapton and across fields to Ivinghoe Aston (probable late lunch – pub or picnic). Afternoon: steep climb onto Ivinghoe Beacon and Ridgeway walk to Tring station. Depart

either        Euston 8.54, Watford Junction 9.11, arrive Leighton Buzzard 9.36

OR           fast Euston 9.13, arrive Leighton Buzzard 9.42

OR           Southern Train from Clapham Junction 8.39, Shepherds Bush 8.53, Harrow & Wealdstone 9.12, arrive Leighton Buzzard 9.47.
