Elthorne Park – Trumpers Way – Long Wood – Trumpers Field – Jubilee Meadow and Blackberry Corner - Great Union Canal – Fox Pub – Elthorne Waterside – Elthorne Park
Route: Leisurely (one steep short climb and stile); park pathways, canal towpath, stony and grassy paths
Local amenities: The Fox pub with its large garden is very close to the path.
Points of interest: Grand Union canal, locks, weir, mileposts; wildlife; Long Wood local nature reserve (wonderful bluebells); Elthorne Park including play area
Transport: local buses, bus stop right outside entrance to Elthorne Park
Start (1) at the entrance of Elthorne Park and make your way past the playground and the tennis courts to the exit (2). Turn right and follow the path to the exit into Trumpers Way (3). Walk to the end of Trumpers Way on the pavement and go straight through the gates and across the railway (4). Turn left and follow the path until you come to a right turn. You will notice a slope on the right, this is the safest way for your return later – ignore it for now. (5) Follow the board walk through Long Wood. At the end go up the steep slope on the right and climb over the stile. (6) Walk around Trumpers Field and then walk back on yourself down the slope. Cross back across the railway (4).
Now turn left through the metal gate and follow the path into the open space of the other part of Trumpers Field. (7) Follow the path all the way around Jubilee Meadow and Blackberry Corner until you see a path leading to the canal lock. (8) Cross the canal and follow it past the Fox Pub (9) and the bridge of Trumpers Way. (3) If you want to cut your walk short, you can retrace your earlier path by going up to the road at this point. Continue along the canal until you see the M4 Bridge and turn left immediately before. Follow the path through the wooded area until you reach the open area with the giant Bambi (11). Walk diagonally towards the park and continue through the park back to its entrance.
