1066 The Harold's Way

This is a 100 mile trail from Westminster to Battle Abbey in East Sussex. It was devised by historian David Clarke and traces the probable route that King Harold and his army might have taken in 1066 to meet William of Normandy (the conqueror) at the Battle of Hastings. He assumes that wherever possible Harold would have used the old Roman roads to the coast that were still in use in Anglo-Saxon times. Where those old roads are now busy A roads or even motorways, he has looked for more rural paths so the walk is mainly through lovely countryside with wonderful views and passing lots of places of historical interest.

We started the walk on Sunday 6th January, the anniversary of Harold’s coronation in Westminster Abbey in 1066. After the two January walks, we will be walking one section a month on the third Saturday of the month. Full details of the walks will be on the programme and web-site
